Passport Pages - Iceland

Jul 19, 2021

For anyone trying to escape the heat, we’ve shuffled things up a bit with this week’s Travel Tuesday feature. Before you question why we would ever want to travel to a place covered in ice, just remember that ‘Greenland is ice, and Iceland is nice’, and after this feature, you’ll be booking flights in no time.

The Westfjords/Latrabjarg Cliff

This stunning seaside cliff is the biggest in all of Iceland. Many people come to bird watch in the summer, as this area is home to over 1 million bird species! If you’re lucky, you may even spot a whale or two.

The Blue Lagoon

Arguably one of the most popular attractions in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon in Grindavik. This lagoon is rich in mineral water that will relax you and give you the softest skin of your life! Located on-site is a spa where you can book treatments such as a facial, and there’s also a cafe serving up some local Icelandic cuisine.

Arbaejarsafn Open Air Museum

Are you ready to step back in time? This open air museum showcases how the Icelandic people lived in their villages hundreds of years ago with traditional turf houses. If you are hoping to stop by, be warned that it is only open from June-August, but is a must-see attraction for families and children.

Esja, Kjalarnes

Esja is the Mountain of Reykjavik that you can see just off the coast of the North shore. Located in Kjalarnes, the mountain is not just a single mountain, but features many volcanic peaks. Make sure you wear your proper hiking boots and dress for the weather, as it’s known to change quite rapidly.

Dyrholaey

This rock is any photographer's dream. It features an arch, and quite literally translates to “door hill island”. The spot looks out onto the Atlantic Ocean and is home to one of Iceland’s very unique black sand beaches.

You’ll also likely spot puffins here that are native to the area. Don’t forget your camera for this stop!
