The Truth About Hitting $100K as a Virtual Assistant (No One Talks About This)

Mar 27, 2026

Let’s just say it:

The internet makes $100K sound like a cute milestone.

Like once you hit it, everything clicks and life becomes this smooth, automated dream.

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t.

And if you’re trying to build a virtual assistant business (or any online service business), the path to $100K is not about doing more…It’s about doing the right things earlier than most people do.

Here’s what actually matters.

1. Your First Clients Matter More Than Your Branding Ever Will

You do NOT need:

  • a website
  • a logo
  • a perfectly named business

(I also say this with literal experience from the school of hard knocks, so don't just take it with a grain of salt)

You DO need:

  • conversations
  • offers
  • results

I have seen people (myself included!) waste months building a brand and making zero dollars.

And I've seen others land their first 3 clients with:

  • a Google doc
  • a simple offer
  • and the confidence to say 'I can help you with that'

Your first goal is not to look legit.

Your first goal is to be USEFUL. People don't care about your website, but they sure do care what you can do for them.

2. If you're Charging Too Little, You're Actually Slowing Yourself Down

This one is HUGE.

A lot of new VA's think, 'I'll start cheap and raise my rates later.'

No.

What actually happens:

  • you attract clients who don't respect your time
  • you overwork to make ends meet
  • you burn out before you ever scale

Low pricing doesn't make you competitive. It makes you replaceable.

You don't need to be the cheapest option.

You need to be the one who:

  • communicates clearly
  • follows through
  • makes their client's life easier

THAT's what people pay for.

3. "I'll Figure it out as I go" Only Works For So Long.

In the beginning? Sure.

Scrappy works.

But if you want to hit $100k, scrappy turns into chaos real fast.

At some point you need:

  • systems
  • SOPs
  • clear workflows

Because without them:

  • you're stuck in your inbox all day
  • every task feels urgent
  • nothing is repeatable

And here's the part no one wants to hear:

YOU DO NOT RISE TO YOUR GOALS. YOU FALL TO YOUR SYSTEMS.

If you don't build them early, you'll rebuild your entire business later. (Ask me how I know.)

4. You are NOT paid for tasks - you are paid for THINKING

This is the shift.

Beginner VA:

"Tell me what to do."

$100k VA:

"Here's what I recommend we do, and I've already started."

Clients don't want another task doer or another person to manage.

They want:

  • someone who anticipates
  • someone who solves problems
  • someone who creates clarity

If you can take something off their plate AND make it better?!

You become irreplaceable.

5. Your Offer Needs to Solve a REAL, Expensive Problem

Read this as many times as you need to, it is NOT:

  • 'I do admin'
  • 'I help with social media'
  • 'I can support your business'

That's vague. And vague doesn't sell.

Strong offers sound like:

  • 'I'll get you to inbox zero and keep it that way'
  • 'I'll build your onboarding system so clients stop slipping through the cracks'
  • I'll organize your backend so you can actually scale'

The clearer the outcome, the easier the sale.

6. You don't need MORE clients, you need BETTER ones

Let's do the math: $100k/year = ~$8,300/month

You do NOT need 20 clients to hit that.

You need:

  • 5 clients at ~ $1,700/month

or

  • 3 clients at ~ $2,800/month

The goal is not volume.

The goal is alignment + value.

More clients = more communication, more chaos, more context switching.

Better clients = deeper work, better results, more referrals.

7. If you don't Learn Delegation Early, YOU will become the Bottleneck

This is where most people stall.

They build a business....and then trap themselves inside it.

If everything relies on you:

  • you can't scale
  • you can't take time off
  • you can't grow beyond your current capacity

At some point, you have to shift from:

"How do I do this?"

to:

"How do I build this so it runs without me doing everything?"

THAT is the difference between a freelances and a business owner.

So...what ACTUALLY gets you to $100k?

Not hustle.

Not aesthetics.

Not waiting until you feel 'ready'.

Its:

  • get in the room (clients > branding)
  • charge based on value, not fear
  • build systems earlier than you think you need to
  • think like a partner, not an assistant
  • solve real problems
  • focus on fewer, better clients
  • start delegating before you feel ready

Final Thought

If you're sitting here thinking:

"Okay...but where do I even start?"

Start here: What is ONE problem you KNOW you can solve for someone right now?

Not perfectly.

Not forever.

Just enough to help.

That's your entry point.

Everything else gets built from there.

And before I go, I wouldn't be your favourite tough love VA Mentor if I didn't push you a bit! (because that's why you are here!):

You don't need more information right now.

You need to decide: Are you building a business....or are you staying in 'preparation mode' because it feels safer?

PICK ONE.
