Passport Pages - Stockholm

Nov 22, 2021

This Travel Tuesday we are taking you all back overseas (if you’re from the America’s) to Stockholm, Sweden! This beautiful city is the capital of Sweden and encompasses 14 islands amongst the Baltic Sea. It features picturesque (but hard on the ankles) cobblestone streets and ochre-coloured buildings of Gamla Stan (the old town). Don’t worry about trying to learn a new language when you travel here, because about 80% of Swedes speak English! Although, there is always that chance you may come across someone who doesn't, so maybe learn some basic Swedish phrases just in case.

Sveriges Kungahus (Royal Palace)

Take a day out of your itinerary just to visit the Royal Palace, located by the water’s edge on the periphery of Gamla Stan. This is the official residence of the King of Sweden, but the Queen’s residence is elsewhere on the island of Drottningholm (about a 45-minute ferry ride from Stockholm).

Here you’ll get a rich taste of the once mighty Swedish Empire, as this palace is one of the largest in Europe, boasting in excess of 600 rooms and several museums that date back from the 18th century and are built in Baroque style.

Skansen Open-Air Museum

Talk about cool! This open-air museum opened in 1891 on the Island of Djurgarden and is a great place for families (especially those travelling with kids). It features a super cool Skansen Aquarium and Children’s Zoo, and will take you right back to how life was hundreds of years ago.

More than 150 buildings were collected from all over the country and reassembled here in order to portray different districts, that include manor houses, bakeries, churches, and more!

Fotografiska

For all our photographers thinking of travelling abroad, you may want to take a quick pit-stop here. Fotografiska is Stockholm’s museum of contemporary photography and hosts an electric mix of exhibitions throughout the year. Here you’ll find a cafe, restaurant, store, and gallery, and from the top floor you can enjoy one of the most marvelous views over the city.

In recent years the venue has been acknowledged as one of the world’s premier photography venues. It’s restaurant serves up organic, sustainably-produced cuisine, and has been dubbed one of the city’s coolest eateries around.

Ostermalm

If shopping is what you’re after, say no more. Ostermalm is the most exclusive district in the city, where chic international labels rub shoulders with high-class Scandinavian design. You’ll find a bounty of flagship shops and designer boutiques, with the neighbourhood around Stureplan offering plenty of posh shops (some with sky high prices).

Ericsson Globe

One of Stockholm’s modern landmark’s is the Ericsson Globe. The SkyView will take you to the top of the world’s largest spherical building, where you can enjoy a magnificent view from 130 meters above sea level.

Tours from aboard the gondolas take 30 minutes and depart every 10 minutes, but arrive early, as line ups can pick up quickly.
